Beta 2 Posted [Update 2]

The current transitional beta page has been updated with beta 2 of My Avatar Editor. Changes include (but may not necessarily be limited to):
  • Fixed lower hair for 8th style (row 3, column 2) on page 6
  • Some interface reshuffling (tab reordering)
  • Titles over avatar characteristics/options
  • Shadow is a semi-transparent solid; this should cause less problems exporting
  • Option to remove shadow from export
  • Transparent backgrounds for exports show as a checkerboard
  • Client-based (as opposed to server-based) save/load
  • Binary files saved with the extension .mae
  • New XML format (NOT finalized, see this note)
  • New randomizer algorithm
  • Flash Player 10 required
  • and a whole, heck of a lot of code re-writing
Known issues include:
  • The avatar link will not work
  • Users may experience problems saving using Internet Explorer on Windows Vista
Report additional issues as comments to this post. With any luck, I'll be able to clean it up enough this weekend to make it available for download... actually, the "big game" is this weekend, isn't it... make that next weekend :)

Update:
As noted by Tommy, the eyebrow rotations in the latest editor beta were off. This was the result of a copy-and-paste typo where I accidentally had the maximum number of possible rotation values set to the number of possible colors ;). This should now be fixed. The new build version is 1.0.1.31t which you can check for in the top right of the File menu. If your number is lower, clear your cache and reload the page.

Update 2:
As reported by Mapi, I've included a known issue that users using IE and Vista might have troubles saving files.

The eyebrows are a little bit up, and curved. I will show you a comparison between the editor and a photo.

With the previous version (yesterday) I culd export in both, jpg and png. Now when I click in export and then save, the page don't do anything. The version I have is 1.0.1.20t. I've already clear my IE cache and reload the page, but still having the same version

Hi Mapi,

Was the version you were using yesterday Beta 2? If so, can you tell me what this page gives you?

I'm not sure if it was version Beta2, I think it was the transitional beta of your Avatar Editor. When I open de webpage today, I found it a little bit changed. When I try to export an avatar, click the export buton, then the save buton and the page just don't move.

Please provide the output you get from http://www.myavatareditor.com/specs.html

You can see the differences between beta 1 and beta 2 in the last 2 editor screen shots on the blog.

Sorry senocular but I'm not sure if this is what you are asking me. When I type http://www.myavatareditor.com/specs.html in my IE I get this: A=t&SA=t&SV=t&EV=t&MP3=t&AE=t&VE=t&ACC=t&PR=t&SP=f&SB=f&DEB=f&V=WIN 10,0,12,36&M=Adobe Windows&R=1280x800&DP=72&COL=color&AR=1.0&OS=Windows Vista&L=es&IME=t&PT=ActiveX&AVD=f&LFD=f&WD=f&TLS=t&ML=5.1

Yesterday I was using Beta 1.

Thaks for your patience

Yes, that is what I was looking for. I'm not seeing anything there that would cause a problem other than maybe Vista. I'll have to do some research and some Vista tests to see if I can find a problem. I did have a friend use it on Vista with Firefox and that was able to export an image without any problems.

Thaks senocular. I tried using Google Chrome and it goes perfectly! So this must be a problem with IE.

Vista+IE is a security nightmare. I'm sure there's some reason - security-related - why it wouldn't let you save. I'll continue to look into it further. Thanks for letting me know :)

It's IE's Protected Mode that prevents the load/save to work. I've included a note on the beta page to turn it off for those features to work.

Great work - keep it up.

I really like this editor and I'd like to ask some things in private to the author about a Wii homebrew project I'm working on... Is it possible to get the e-mail contact? I haven't found it around... Thanks ^^

Terms of use?

I'd like to use your editor on a health site Im doing for a charity in Spain, to let women create their avatars. First, can I like to your editor? second, are you thinking about making it more Rest API based like Gravatar? If your interested I can help you with the backend code and database bits...

email me at lapido at gmail dot com if you like.....

Ruairi: My Avatar Editor is a client-side avatar creation tool. It is not, nor will be, a hosting service for maintaining user accounts and avatars associated with those accounts.

Others are free to set up their own based on My Avatar Editor, but that is not something I am personally going to pursue.

Currently, it is planned to have the source for My Avatar Editor released under MIT. So, when that happens, you'll be free to use it however you'd like. ;)
