My Avatar Editor - Transitional Beta

For those of you who haven't already noticed, a transitional beta of My Avatar Editor is now online. This is not what My Avatar Editor will ultimately look like, but its different enough from the Wii's™ Mii™ Channel to get it back on the streets (methinks).

Some of the GUI changes include:
  • A change in the color scheme
  • A change in the button (and other control) styles
  • Characteristic buttons (tabs) have been moved to the bottom of the screen
  • All characteristic tabs are represented at the bottom rather than having some in sub-tabs (for example face shapes and facial features now are each given their own tab)
  • Arrows for paging through characteristic variations have been moved to the bottom
  • There is no longer an avatar URL
In addition, there were a number of general fixes to the editor. These include changes that would have made it into the original version of the editor but hadn't yet been pushed live before it went offline. These include:
  • The character shadow is now correctly behind/below the character's feet
  • The eyes on Page 4 Col 1 Row 2 were given the missing eyelashes (the icon preview had them but they were not seen when on the avatar)
  • Character names should now end when a null character is reached; this prevents new short names possibly revealing characters from long names used before the short name was set
  • Fixed mole size range. It was incorrectly going to 15 (steps) when it should have stopped at 8
This version should also be the last version that will work on Flash Player 9. The next release will target Flash Player 10, currently in beta from Adobe. This will allow a lot of the hacks in the current release to be removed and allow for the updated save and load feature mentioned in a previous post (which supports offline saving and loading). Additionally, the next release should have a new look and feel that is more unique to My Avatar Editor.

There's no telling when this new version will be released, but it will be a while. I'm currently going through a code review now cleaning things up and taking out the aforementioned hacks where necessary. There will be some other architectural changes that could delay this process not to mention the fact that I still have to figure out how to implement Mii™ compatibility within the new feature sets that are to be added. I might provide more detail on that situation at a later time.

Hey, to anyone interested I uploaded an AIR version of MiiEditor to tide people over. Its the same thing as the M4 version just repackaged so it can run on the latest AIR version (1.1).

senocular, if this is a problem I apologize. Just thought people would appreciate being able to still use it.

The download is here.

how can i save the avatar i create as a *.mii file to transfer back to the console?

senocular said...

when you save out of the editor using the normal save method, it creates a .avatar file (I think). That is the same as a .mii - or at least it should be, save for the extension. If you have an application that only recognizes .mii extensions, try renaming .avatar to .mii.

This is a very cool and fun tool!
Thanks.

But I just notice some of the hair styles are not correct such as the ponytails in Page 4 and Page 6. Is it because it's not a 3D version?

I love this application. It is very well done, and with great that the Miis can be used as avatars. I do have two suggestion:
1.) Include the poses from WiiPlay and from the Check Mii Out Channel. They will not serve any purpose other than for saving Mii images.

2.) Allow an option to create gradient backgrounds for saving Mii pictures.

Othe than that, keep up the great work. ^_^

Hi,
I love your editor and I would like to print on Tshirt, unfortunatly the PrintShop ask for a vector format samethink like eps... i tried to convert but the result is bad, could you add a vector format to the list of format in which we can save?

If it is non VERY expensive i could give you a contribute :-)

hi, i think that this project is a really great one. In fact, i was wondering if you had an email address that i could contact you at senocular? I am working on a project my self with miis, only instead of having them on the computer, i am making them for the Nintendo DS. I am having a hard time reading the binary files for a mii, and was wondering if you could help me out with it. I just released a demo version today. For more info on it, visit: http://forum.palib.info/index.php?topic=6073.msg42601; my name is GEMISIS. The only issue i could see with this is that i am useing C/C++ for this project. My email address can be found there as well. Thanks, and keep up the great work on this project. :)

Any chance of being able to click on the Mii and make it rotate? Or is that something you'd get in trouble with the Big N? I don't really know much about coding/3d objects, but it sounds like it would be difficult. Let us know. Love the software though!!! Great Job!

To RESET the Editor back to the Default Avatar, just Right-Click on the editor and select "Settings". Then click on tab for "Local Storage" and move the slide bar to "NONE".

You will then get a pop up telling you it will delete all offline Java content.

Confirm the delete and move the slide bar back to where it was. Close out and refresh your browser.

Poof! Back to default. (Poor Man's Reset Switch)
